Has Wayne Newton grown too old?
The Tiffany Theatre at the Tropicana Hotel is buzzing with audience these days. The reason behind is the ongoing play of Wayne Newton’s “Once Before I Go”. Wayne Newton, popularly known as “Mr. Las Vegas”, is a truly a legend. He has his own fan following that is so huge and just overwhelming. The persona and the charisma he carries within himself are just amazing. This is the reason that pulls the crowd towards him. While performing he is accompanied by a live orchestra and a group of brilliant singers along with the videos of his past. Although, age and time has weaken his body, but with the energy with which he still performs is just phenomenal.
Ask anyone in Las Vegas about the most prolific performer of the town, the first name you will get to hear is of Wayne Newton. Even I respect him from the bottom of my heart and truly admire him for his contribution to the city, world, and even our military. When I watch his performance, it fills my heart with great respect for him.
I took into consideration his age and begged him not to sing anymore. The growing age has make his body fragile and so his voice too. When I expressed my thoughts that the show would be far better if Newton didn’t sing, to my surprise I was ambushed by a bunch of his ardent followers, as if I had just used foul language against a god. After all, they cannot imagine a show without him. Even Newton’s rough voice soothes their ear. But with me, it is just painful to listen to him. The way he sings the songs from his great album, make me to slit my wrist. I am not trying to be a ruthless critic, but he really needs to think about it now.
I just could not understand why he doesn’t focus on doing some shows that tells about his life and career. Keeping in consideration of his huge fan following, it can be a blockbuster for sure. Rather than singing, it will be far easier for him to narrate some of his stories, play few more instruments, along with playing some of his past videos.
Before the show everyone was ascertained about a completely new show that will be packed with entertainment till the end. But to our utter dismay, we didn’t get it. Keeping aside few new things everything was almost the same that we have been watching since decades.
Even the fan following of Wayne Newton has grown old. This is the reason why they still love him and his performance too. If ever Wayne Newton admits that he is unable to sing anymore, then the only bunch of people who will get shocked is his followers. Now, if it ever happens, then it can prove to be a huge opportunity for the younger generation to embark their career and get some teaching from a legend like Newton. But it is possible only when he quits. Otherwise, he will remain as a matter of joke for the younger generations.
Whoever is advising Mr. Newton on this new show is giving him bad advice. This production will never be respected or praised by any reviewer. They may be kind about the show because of who the man is, but it will never be considered a good show. It is a shame…a strong and brilliant show about and by Wayne Newton is very attainable. I don’t want “Once Before I Go” to be the swan song of Wayne Newton. The show isn’t a good enough tribute to a man that is truly a legend in this town. Wayne Newton is a wonderful person and is synonymous to Las Vegas. He deserves better.
There should be someone who is advising Mr. Newton to continue his career, which must be the reason behind of doing new shows. It is a really a bad advice for sure. Leave behind the chances of success, this production is going to be a flop that will never be admired or praised by any justifiable critic. They would have suggested so, keeping in consideration the stature and age of the man, but they never thought that, how to make a show a successful one, should be on the top of the priority list.
It is scornful that a show about and by Wayne Newton is easily within the reach. Keeping his popularity in mind it is really shameful that “Once Before I Go” happened to be the parade song of Wayne Newton. This show neither at all compliments his persona and nor does it is good enough to pay tribute to a man who is truly considered as a God in his town. His persona is even bigger than Las Vegas, therefore he deserves better.
